As we get deeper into the 2019 tax season and your communication with our office becomes all the more frequent, you will probably begin to notice that we’ve added a new tax preparer to our team – Marc Smith! In order for you to get to know your new tax preparer better, we’re giving you the scoop on Marc in this week’s team spotlight.
Who is Marc?
Although Marc only began working with the Alfano & Company team about 8 months ago, he is no stranger to the tax world. He is on the path to becoming a Certified Public Accountant, with both Bachelors and Master’s degrees in accounting, specializing in tax. He is currently a staff accountant at Alfano & Company, which means his role involves tax return preparation and responding to notices received by clients from taxing authorities. As an added bonus to the Alfano & Company team, Marc is also a notary public.
But, as is the case with most people, to truly come to know someone it’s helpful to learn about their interests outside of work. After spending all day in our tax world, Marc chooses to decompress by reading fantasy and sci-fi novels and playing D&D. You can even catch him on the dance floor, where ballroom dancing is his style of choice.
Why is he so good at what he does?
Marc’s rookie status at Alfano & Company has no bearing on his ability to prepare tax returns. He already has five prior tax seasons under his belt at other local accounting firms, including two seasons in which he was able to familiarize himself with the same tax software that we use at Alfano & Company.
Furthermore, all employees at Alfano & Company receive extensive training in order to stay current on new tax laws. Despite Marc’s vast experience he too continues to expand his repertoire of tax knowledge. He acknowledges, “I have learned more about tax preparation and tax law in the 8 months I have been with Alfano & Company than in the five prior seasons of tax prep. This is both in practical knowledge of how to prepare returns, mostly those related to businesses, and general knowledge about tax law.”
