Do I need to provide Alfano & Company with my tax forms?

Yes! We don’t need the original forms (a copy that is scanned is ok) but we do need to see copies of the actual W2s, 1099s, K-1s, and other forms you received, as each form may contain additional information and we need to make sure everything is input correctly.

Do I need to schedule a tax meeting?
No! If your tax situation is similar to how it’s been in past years, you won’t need to make time in your busy schedule for an appointment with David. You can simply drop off, mail, upload, email securely, or fax your tax documents. If you would still like to discuss your tax situation with David, we can schedule a phone call after we have received your documents.
Why should I use the portal?
Our portal offers tax preparers and our clients a convenient way to access documents, transfer data (like forms and notices), and convey information with a file exchange feature. Once a return is uploaded to the Portal, it’s there forever, so you can always log in and view your return. Plus, it’s much more secure than sending via email and you can access it 24/7! You won’t have to make repeated trips to our office to send us documents or get them signed – you can do it all from home on your computer at NO ADDITIONAL COST!

What is the $25 printing fee for?
If you choose to receive your completed tax return in a paper format (PAPER or BOTH option), we charge an additional $25 for printing. If you choose the PORTAL option, there will be no additional fee.
When will I receive my tax forms?
By law, your W2s and 1099s must be mailed to you by January 31st, so you’ll likely start receiving your forms by early February. Additional forms, like K-1s, may be sent later. However – please give us any documents you have as early as possible, so that we can begin your return while we wait for the remaining forms.
What is the Audit Correspondence Plan?
This plan is an insurance that we offer in case you are audited for this return. This means we would handle the correspondence on your behalf with the IRS or the state up to the appellate level. If the audit was caused by a mistake that we made, we would certainly take care of it for you, but most audits are random and not covered by our tax preparation fee.
Do I really have to pay these estimates?
As the IRS requires tax payments are made throughout the year instead of all at once (i.e. April 15th) our tax preparation software automatically generates these vouchers if they are deemed necessary. These estimates are for the following tax year, based on the tax return from the prior year.

There are 4 quarters for estimated payments. The due dates are:

  • April 15th
  • June 15th
  • September 15th
  • January 15th

If the IRS determines that these payments were required, but they were not made, you will most likely receive penalties and interest on any late or unmade payments. If you’d like to review your current tax situations or these estimates later in the year, contact us to schedule an appointment, and David will be able to adjust them as necessary.

When can I expect my refund?
The IRS and states typically say that refunds will be issued in 4-8 weeks. If your tax return is being paper filed, it may take over 12 weeks before you receive your refund, especially if it is a busy time of year.
What if I can’t afford to pay my taxes?
We can request an installment agreement with the IRS. However, interest will continue to accrue each month, so we do recommend that you pay as much as you possibly can by April 15th.
What should I do if I am a victim of identity theft?
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the lead federal agency for identity theft, and the agency recommends the following steps for an identity theft victim:

  1. Report the identity theft to the FTC at www.identitytheft.gov.
  2. Contact one of the major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on the victim’s records. The contact information for the bureaus is as follows –
    1. www.Equifax.com 1-888-766-0008;
    2. www.Experian.com 1-888-397-3742; and
    3. www.TransUnion.com 1-800-680-7289.
  1. Close any financial or credit accounts opened fraudulently.
