“One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don’t choose your passions; your passions choose you.”

~Jeff Bezos, Chairman & CEO of Amazon.com

In 2014, Dylan Martin, a Connecticut Sophomore, was struggling to come up with a business idea for an entrepreneurship course taught through the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE).

And in 2021, he and his father, Tim Martin, now own and operate a successful beekeeping business that is serving much of the Fairfield County community.

We are pleased to share their story in this Client Spotlight series!

How The Passion Chose Them

Dylan Martin with bees

Let’s go back to 2014 where a young Dylan was contemplating a new business venture.

“I was watching a documentary on honeybees in the United States with my father,” he tells us. “The whole show was centered around the problem of dying honeybees but by the end of the show, there was no indication that anyone had a solution. Jokingly, I told my father that we should get a beehive to help save the bees. The next day he came home with a beehive and a box of live bees. I immediately found my passion for beekeeping and haven’t looked back since.”

The Passion Develops Into A Business

Their business, Mill Brook Honey, offers a variety of products and services. Products include one-pound jars of

honey, beeswax candles, and small, portable beehives called “Nucs”. As Certified Master Beekeepers, Tim and Dylan also offer beekeeping consulting services for those who have problems with their beehives, especially throughout the winter.

You can find their products year-round in stores around Fairfield County, including Gilbertie’s Herb Garden in Westport, Cedar Corners General Store, Just A Peace Gift Shop, and Half Full Brewery in Stamford. In fact at Gilbertie’s Herb Garden the beehives are allowed to be viewed from a distance during the nectar flows. There, they also allow patrons to view the harvest during an annual presentation run by Mill Brook Honey where they teach the importance of beekeeping, as well as host an open Q&A for those with beekeeping inquiries.

Regarding our services, Dylan explains, “Alfano & Company is crucial to our beekeeping financial activities and they help me to understand the fundamentals of business expenses. I’m interning for the largest beekeeper in Hawaii over the summer, and David Alfano has given me advice on how to categorize these business expenses.” It is our aim to provide services that will benefit Mill Brook Honey not only now, but also in the years to come as it continues to grow and thrive!
